Acadian Seaplants – Charlesville

1.  What does your Business provide?

Acadian Seaplants Charlesville is the largest land-based sea vegetable cultivation and food processing site in the world.  The products we grow and process here are edible seaweeds of the finest quality that are sold primarily to Japan.

2. What made you want to start your Business?

Louis Deveau, the Chair and Founder of Acadian Seaplants, acquired the Canadian assets of FMC,USA in 1980 and founded his companyin December of that year.  The Charlesville site at that time was growing seaweed for the extraction of carrageenan – a food gum.   Then, in 1992 the Charlesvillesite was revamped to grow and process the unique Hana Tsunomata™ - not available anywhere else in the world.  It is a beautiful sea vegetable offered in a bouquet of pink, green and yellow and is used as the center piece in Asian dishes including sushimi, soups and salads.

3.  When did you join the Chamber of Commerce & how have we helped?

Our Charlesville operation became a member in February 2019 and we are being represented by Aubrey Hillyard, our Production and Maintenance Manager. The networking benefits have been very useful on two important fronts; we have learned about, and subsequently got involved in, several training and hiring programs and we have been able to share our operation’s best practices and lessons learned to help other companies in our community.
